Center for the Study of World Civilizations? I must confess surprise when first hearing this name. But now returning to Tokyo Institute of Technology as president, I can say that the Center is a fantastic enterprise bringing the fresh winds of art into the university's world of science and technology. I myself rushed to give backing to the Center by holding a music lecture in which I played my double bass.
I hope--and fully expect--that our students will be drawn to the Center's many fascinating courses, and I look forward to the development of its various activities, including its projects, research and the wide dissemination of knowledge.

>>Message from former president

The 21st century will be an era of great innovation and achievement for Japanese youth. I am convinced of this.
But in order to achieve their goals, young people must be presented with challenging ideas, and new ways of thinking and creating. These will free their imagination and allow them to create things that will benefit not only themselves and their country, but all humanity.
Roger Pulvers
Head of the Center
The center is dedicated to the study of and research into the various civilizations that humans have created around the world. This will include a thoroughgoing exploration of the lives of the people and the historical forces that have shaped the world as we know it today.
- Academy of the Humanities
- Academy of the Arts
In the Academy of the Humanities, students and staff will explore, through classes and seminars, the many elements that have created the beliefs and ideas at the core of human civilizations.
In the Academy of the Arts, students and staff will actually create works of art in one or a number of forms and genres, in order to explore the most basic and important aesthetic impulses that underpin culture.
